Credentials: Professor Amar joined the Yale faculty in 1985, after clerking for Justice Stephen Breyer. A 1984 Yale Law graduate and a former editor of the Yale Law Review, Amar teaches Constitutional Law and Reading the Constitution: Substance and Method. He has authored several books on constitutional law. He also served as a consultant for ABC’s The West Wing and was ranked among the top 20 legal minds by Legal Affairs magazine.

Description: This course provides students with tools and techniques for interpreting the United States constitution. In particular, it focuses on popular sovereignty, separation of powers, Federalism, and religious freedom, outlining how the meaning and limits of these themes have been construed over the years. It also covers constitutional theories, landmark cases, and the impact of the constitution on various branches of government.
