Bar Exam Passage Rates Soar Thanks To Law School’s Closure

Bar exam passage rates are through the roof in North Carolina following Charlotte Law’s closure.
Above The Law reports July 2017’s passage rate for first time takers in North Carolina was 73.80%. Compare that to just a year ago, in July 2016, where the passage rate for first time takers was 6.3 percentage points lower at 65.9%.
Take a look at overall passage rates for the July bar exam over the years. In July 2017, the overall bar passage rate in North Carolina was 61.75% — a 5.25% increase from last July’s passage rate of 56.5%.

The increase in bar exam passage rate comes following the mass departure of students from Charlotte Law prior to the school’s closure.
Wake Forest University School of Law, Duke University School of Law and Campbell Law School took the top three spots with the highest overall passage rates in North Carolina, according to data reported by Triangle Business Journal.

The total number of test takers for July’s N.C. Bar Exam was 1,017. For February, the total number of test takers was merely 618.
Charlotte School of Law closed last month following poor graduation and bar passage rates. “While good lawyers have graduated from Charlotte School of Law, the school too often failed to deliver for its students,” Attorney General Josh Stein said.
