Law School Donor Calling on Students to Boycott Alma Mater

A law school donor is telling students to boycott the University of Alabama in response to Alabama’s near-total ban on abortion.
Hugh Culverhouse Jr., an attorney and philanthropist, donated $21.5 million last year to the University of Alabama Law School, which renamed the school to the Hugh F. Culverhouse Jr. School of Law, the Daily Beast reports.
“I cannot stand by silently and allow my name to be associated with a state educational system that teaches students law that clearly conflicts with the United States Constitution and Federal law, and which promotes blatant discrimination,” Culverhouse says in a statement.
School Response
On Wednesday, the University of Alabama Chancellor Finis St. John said he’s recommending that the board of trustees return Culverhouse’s donation and remove his name from the law school.
However, the school claims that the conflict is not related to the abortion law boycott. Rather, it says, Culverhouse is trying to manage the law school’s operations.
“Donors may not dictate university administration,” the statement reads.
Abortion Ban
Last month, Alabama signed into law a near-total abortion law that stands as the most restrictive anti-abortion measure passed in the US since Roe v. Wade, CBS News reports.
The “Human Life Protection Act” bans all abortions in Alabama except when “abortion is necessary in order to prevent a serious health risk.”
“Today, I signed into law the Alabama Human Life Protection Act,” Alabama Gov. Kay Ivey wrote in a statement. “To the bill’s many supporters, this legislation stands as a powerful testament to Alabamians’ deeply held belief that every life is precious & that every life is a sacred gift from God.”
