What NYU Law Looks For In Applicants

New York University’s School of Law ranks number six in US News’ “Best Law Schools” ranking.

Business Insider recently spoke to experts on how applicants can get into the prestigious law school including what type of applicant admissions officers look for.

INTERNATIONAL EXPERIENCES IS A PLUS

NYU Law emphasizes its international focus. Thus, as an applicant, you’ll want to highlight any international experience you may have.

“If applicants have experiences studying abroad or working overseas, it helps position them as a candidate with a global perspective and adds to their mission in developing legal talents that can make an impact in a fast-changing world,” Joseph Vijay Ingam, an admissions consultant and former LSAT instructor, tells Business Insider.

HAVE A STRONG RESUME

Your resume to NYU Law should to be top notch. Experts say it’s important to cater your resume to the specific school that you’re applying to.

“Academic resumes are longer and focus more on academic and community-service accomplishments,” Ingam tells Business Insider. “If you want to actually get accepted by the school, it is important to have a good resume that is customized for the needs of an academic institution.”

Moreover, you’ll want to make sure each bullet is concise.

“Ideally, each bullet point should provide evidence of high performance,” Gabriel Kuris, founder of Top Law Coach and contributor at US News writes. “Mention how often or how many times you did something, the results of your work or how you compared to others in your position.”

WHO NYU LAW LOOKS FOR

If you’re lucky enough to score an interview with NYU Law, it’s important to highlight certain characteristics that admissions officers seek out.

“NYU looks for professionalism, maturity, compassion, passion for learning, and a strong interest in the law,” Ingam tells Business Insider. “You project these characteristics in an interview for admission or a scholarship program by discussing your motivations to become an attorney, who are your attorney mentors that inspire you and you admire, educational background, and law-related coursework, community service, and professional experience.”
