Boston Law Firm Works To Expand Pipeline of Diverse Attorneys

Burns & Levinson, a Boston-based law firm, is partnering with the Law in Tech Diversity Collaborative (LiTD) to expand its pipeline and access to diverse attorneys.

The law firm will host a diverse cohort of 1L summer associates, who will spend 10 weeks in total with the law firm. Five of those weeks will be spent with CarGurus, a client of Burns & Levinson.

“We hope that our legal team’s participation in this program opens doors for law students that otherwise would not have had this opportunity and we are thankful to both LiTD and Burns & Levinson for their collaboration in this initiative,” Stephen Cardente, Senior Corporate Counsel at CarGurus, says in a press release.

INCREASING DIVERSITY

White lawyers have comprised over 90% of all law firm partners over the past decade, according to the National Association of Law Placement’s 2020 diversity report.

This summer, the law firm will host four summer associates: Henry Gaylord, a rising 2L from Northeastern University School of Law, Justine Kim, a rising 3L from Boston College Law School, and Sofia Martinez-Guasch and Donald Slater, Jr., both rising 3Ls from Suffolk University School of Law.

“We are thrilled to be participating in LiTD’s East Coast expansion this year and are excited to have these four talented law students with us this summer,” said Elizabeth Brady Murillo, Director of Professional Development at Burns & Levinson.

Shepard Davidson, a partner and former co-chair of the Business Litigation Group at Burns & Levinson, says the program will help provide unique opportunities for learning and growth.

“With law firms and innovative companies working together to address the lack of diversity in the law through programs like LiTD, we really can make a difference.”
