Tennessee-Based Law School Reappoints Dean

Vanderbilt Law School’s dean has been reappointed to a third term.
Chris Guthrie will begin another five-year on July 1, 2019, the law school announced.
“During Dean Guthrie’s leadership, the Law School has made significant gains on strategic priorities, including the creation of new endowed scholarships; the expansion and diversification of the faculty; and the launching of new programs in social justice, law and finance, and law and innovation,” Susan R. Wente, Provost and Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs, says in a press release. “In a still-tumultuous time for legal education, l am grateful for his service and look forward to the Law School’s continued upward momentum.”
An Established Law and Social Science Scholar
Guthrie, who joined Vanderbilt faculty in 2002, has an established career in the legal sphere. His expertise and research include behavioral law and economics, dispute resolution, negotiation and judicial decision-making.
In the decade that he has served as dean, Vanderbilt Law hired more than 40% of its current faculty and awarded 14 faculty members endowed chairs. The law school has also been ranked in the top 10 nationally during his time as dean.
According to his Vanderbilt profile, Guthrie also spent six years on the faculty at the University of Missouri School of Law prior to joining Vanderbilt. At Vanderbilt Law, Guthrie has served as associate dean for academic affairs for four years before officially being named Dean in July 2009.
“I am deeply honored to serve this school as dean, and I am grateful each and every day to work with gifted faculty, inspiring students, devoted staff, and spirited and generous alumni,” Guthrie says. “We have a special community at the Law School, and I am truly fortunate to be a part of it.”
