Wake Forest Names First Female Law School Dean

 
After spending nearly nine months at the helm of Wake Forest University School of Law (ranked 47 in the U.S. News Rankings) as interim dean, Suzanne Reynolds will become the school’s first female dean effective July 1. Reynolds began her role as interim dean last September when Blake Morant left the school to become dean at George Washington University Law School (ranked 22 in the U.S. News rankings).
“During much of my year as interim dean, people across our constituencies urged me to consider the position,” Reynolds said in a statement. “I resisted, but amazing students, faculty, staff, brother and sister alumni, and friends of the law school and university convinced me.”
Reynolds joined the law faculty at Wake Forest in 1981 and has served as the law school’s executive associate dean for academic affairs from 2010 to 2014. As the official dean, Reynolds will oversee a $20 million budget, 69 faculty members, 61 staff members, and 525 students.
“She is a wonderful mentor and model for our law students, exemplifying the blend of research and practice that distinguishes the school,” Nathan Hatch, Wake Forest University president, said in the prepared release. “She has the vision and experience to ensure Wake Forest will continue to set the highest standards in legal education.”
Reynolds earned her law degree from Wake Forest and then worked as a civil litigator for Greensboro, North Carolina-based law firm before returning to academia.
“Suzanne blends top-flight legal research, brilliance in the classroom, and widely-recognized applied legal expertise in ways that make her a terrific choice to lead the school of law,” said Provost Rogan Kersh in a prepared statement. “The caliber of candidates who want to be senior leaders at Wake is heartening and astonishing.”
According to Association of American Universities (AAU) research, there are more female deans in law schools than business or medical schools (albeit a still incredibly low number). Out of the 45 law schools that are a part of the AAU, 10 have female deans. Business schools have eight female deans, out of 56 member schools while women deans make up seven of the 44 member medical schools.
