The Top Schools For Trial Advocacy

In 2015, the Georgetown University Law Center jumped from #8 to #4 in trial advocacy. Students can hone their courtroom skills by joining the Barristers’ Council, which sponsors competition teams in Appellate Advocacy, Trial Advocacy, and ADR Advocacy. The council produced the 2013 Moot Court national champions and the 2014 ABA Appellate Advocacy champions. The school also hosts the White Collar Crime Invitational, the only mock trial competition in this area. It is also one of the few programs to offer a LL.M. in trial advocacy.

 
Based in Houston, the South Texas College of Law ranks among the most decorated trial advocacy programs. After completing 30 hours, students can take advocacy courses, which cover areas like civil pretrial, civil trial, criminal trial, appellate advocacy, family trial, and mock trial litigation. To prepare students for competition, the school offers a summer trial academy, which serves as a feeder to the moot court and mock trial teams. From 2012-2013, the school won seven moot court competitions, along with winning 15 ABA National Appellate Advocacy Competitions during its history (the most of any law school). In addition, the program is known for its strong alumni support, with 20-30 alumni lawyers providing mentoring to team members.
Editor’s Note: U.S. News & World Report only ranked nine schools for trial advocacy in 2015. The University of Denver Strum College of Law, the Washington University School of Law, and the Northwestern University School of Law all tumbled out of the top 10 from the previous year.
