Credentials: Professor Helfer is the co-director of Duke’s Center for International and Comparative Law. An author of two books and over 60 scholarly articles, Helfer has also testified before the U.N. Human Rights Council, filed amicus briefs to various international human rights courts on behalf of NGOs, and served as an adviser to the U.S. Department of State. After leaving private practice, he taught at Harvard Law, Princeton University, and the University of Chicago’s School of Law. He earned his JD from NYU Law in 1992.
Graded: Students will receive a signed Statement of Accomplishment for successfully completing the course.
Description: This course explores what human rights are – and how laws protecting them are enforced globally, regionally, and internationally. It also covers how international bodies and advocates hold governments and individuals accountable for respecting fundamental rights. From genocide to forced abortions, students will the interlocking systems that protect human liberty – and the limitations inherent to the current model.
