Temple Law Grad Arrested For Alleged Murder Of Fellow Grad

It’s been a confusing few weeks for the Temple University Beasley School of Law community. Three weeks ago, the announcement of the murder of a recent Temple Law grad made headlines. Weeks after 27-year-old Shazim Uppal was found shot multiple times in his Audi in the parking lot of a Delaware nursing home, police have arrested 25-year-old, Benjamin Rauf.
Rauf was arrested this week in his Albany County home in upstate New York. The parking lot where Uppal was found was in Hockessin, Delaware, about 100 yards from his family home and about 40 miles from Philadelphia-based Temple University, where the two originally met.
Local police said “a substantial amount of marijuana” was found in Uppal’s Audi with him and were confused at the amount left when they believe the motive was robbery.
“The loss of Shazim Uppal, a 2015 law school graduate, was obviously devastating,” law school dean JoAnne Epps said in a statement. “It was made all the more sad and difficult by today’s arrest of another recent graduate of the Temple Law School for his murder.”
New Castle County Police Chief Elmer Setting told Delaware Online that both grads were involved “in the game” of pot dealing, but was unsure who was purchasing from whom when the deal went sour.
According to reports from the New York Daily News, family members claim Uppal was not the “type of person” who would be involved in drugs or marijuana. Rauf is currently in jail awaiting an extradition to Delaware where he will be charged with first-degree murder.
