The Most Generous Law Schools – And The Stingiest

Whether it is a matter of will, resources or engaged alumni, some schools are simply more disposed to pulling out all the stops to lure students. Traditionally, students have perceived lower-ranked schools as being more willing to pony up funds to lure top talent. The reality, however, is more complex. Technically, the median grants are lower among schools below the T14 (though that could also be tied to tuitions at these schools being $10,000 to $20,000 less than T14 schools). Even more, each school segments its dollars differently, with some, such as Virginia and Brigham Young, spending more money on fewer students to beef up the tops of their classes. At the same time, other programs, including Duke and North Carolina, subscribe to a more egalitarian model by including more students in the spoils.

In doing so, they tip their hand on what they value, who they’ll negotiate with, and how far they’ll go. In any negotiation, the person who speaks first often starts at a disadvantage. And the percentage, amount, and allocation of grant money speaks volumes. In an era where supply outstrips demand, that puts potential applicants in the driver’s seat.
