Law School CFO Fired After Amassing $50k at Hooters and Other Expenses

Well, you don’t see this everyday.
John LaTorre, the former chief financial officer of Barry University, has earned himself a sizable amount of negative publicity and a speedy firing from his position thanks to an impressive list of allegations.
It all started with LaTorre’s arrest on the charge of second degree grand theft for allegedly taking of property valued somewhere between $20,000 and $100,00, as evidenced by a custody inmate information report from the Miami-Dade County Police Department.
Later in the week, more information became available on LaTorre’s illicit exploits. The full series of allegations are, without a doubt, eye-catching.
The former CFO of Barry University is facing accusations of severely misusing the corporate credit card given to him by Barry Law – a bill to the tune of approximately $50,000. According to court records, LaTorre allegedly used the credit card to pay his own personal utility bills, in addition to wining and dining his friends at establishments like Hooter’s.
Additional details are available on LaTorre’s case from the Orlando Sentinel:
“A witness told authorities that LaTorre used the American Express corporate card “excessively and and made unauthorized transactions” from February 2014 through June 2015, according to the arrest affidavit. The affidavit also said LaTorre wrote checks to himself.”
After he heard his Miranda rights, LaTorre admitted “he was aware he made personal transactions on the university’s corporate account,” the affidavit said.
LaTorre is scheduled to appear before Judge Teresa Pooler on August 6 for an arraignment hearing.
